Using 1st Edition Spells in 2nd Edition Campaigns
Like many people, I've found a number of things I like about the 2nd Edition AD&D rules, but overall prefer the 1st Edition. One of the biggest wins of the 2nd Edition is the categorization of spells by Spheres of Influence (for Priest spells) or Schools of Magic (for Wizard spells). If you're like me, and haven't got around to buying the 2nd Edition books (or don't plan to, ever) but are still familiar with the new rules regarding Specialization and Spheres of Influence and want use them, you have a large number of spells outlined in various 1st Edition books to deal with. What do you do?
Well, fear not! I've taken it upon myself to categorize all the old spells present in the 1st Edition books The Player's Handbook, Unearthed Arcana, and Oriental Adventures. You can view them in a variety of ways, just click on the various buttons in the following forms to get the spell list you're just dying to read.
Notes
I've merged the Illusionist and Druid spell lists into the Wizard and Priest lists, respectively, as the new rules require. Additionally, I've categorized some of the spells myself; if you don't agree with the schools or spheres I've placed them in, just drop me a note with a good argument where they should go, and I'll consider it.
Also:
- Spells in italics are reversible; the name of the reversed spell, if different from the original, is given in parenthesis
- In the Source field, there are abbreviations for the text in which the original spell can be found. If the spell can be found in more than one text, I list the source for the one I consider authoritative (usually in theis order of precedence: PH, UA, OA). These are the abbrevs:
- OA - From Oriental Adventures (©1985 E. Gary Gygax)
- PH - From The Player's Handbook (©1978 TSR)
- UA - From Unearthed Arcana (©1985 E. Gary Gygax)
- In addition to the Schools of Magic and Spheres of Influence found in TSR's Tome of Magic, I have added another Sphere of Influence (primarily to deal with the preponderance of Eastern Spells concerning the spirit world). This is the Sphere of Spirits.
- Since I have integrated the druidic and illusionist spells into to Priest and Wizard tables now, sometimes a given spell will not be found in the reference work at the level I list. This is particularly true of upper-level illusionist spells. When this occurs, look for the spell to be one to two levels higher or lower in the illusionist or druidic spell lists.
- Similarly, if there are multiple versions of the spell in the reference work I list, use the one at the level I list it at. If there are multiple spells at the same level, use your best judgement. I tend to favor the illusionist over the magic-user and the druidic over the clerical, but that's up to you.
For those not familiar with the new rules regarding Spheres and Schools, here's a brief overview.
